What is today the Tryall Hotel and Golf Club was once an English coastal fort built for defence against the Spanish and the French by Oliver Cromwell between 1650 and 1620 after he captured the island from the Spanish. Before that it was the home of the Taínos. The estate was used for livestock and sugar, coconut and pimento cultivation.. In 1957, it was sold to American businessmen and became The Tryall Club.
